• THEY ARE OPTIMISTIC: One of the chief functions of a vision statement is to motivate. When you draft yours, step back and ask, “Does this paint a picture of tomorrow that fills me with hope?” The answer must be yes. If your organization exists to combat a global injustice or to improve a serious marketplace flaw, make sure it devotes more words to the solution than to the problem.
Great leaders have double vision. It is focused like a microscope, but is far-reaching like a telescope. You must have both. Make sure your vision statement focuses on the now but yearns for what is next and possible. As former secretary of state Colin Powell once said, “optimism is a force multiplier.”
• THEY ARE SIMPLE: If your vision statement takes more than five minutes to memorize, it’s too complicated. If it has bullet points, it needs refinement. If it contains words that require the hearer to reference a dictionary, grab a thesaurus and find some synonyms that simplify. The simpler a vision statement is, the more profound, powerful, and potent it can be.
• THEY ARE PERSONAL: People will work for other people in a way they will not work for anything else. As leadership guru Dan Rockwell wrote, “Vision always centers on people, never projects, programs, properties, or profits.”2 Make sure your statement isn’t loaded down in industry jargon or focused on technical elements of business.
• THEY ARE FLEXIBLE: Though a vision statement can benefit from a level of specificity, it should be flexible enough to allow for the changes that will inevitably come with time. As new technologies arise, marketplace trends emerge, or your business model adjusts, this statement should still work. When a vision statement is flexible, it will be liberating instead of limiting.
